Cruise port of Honolulu, Oahu, Hawaii (USA)

If your cruise stops in Honolulu - congratulations! It's not just a port of call, but a real adventure. Oahu is the heart of Hawaii, where life is vibrant, and the ocean meets skyscrapers and tropical gardens. Here you can see everything: from historical landmarks to beaches where famous movies were filmed. I'm sharing my tried-and-true tips so you can get the most out of your day or two in port.

Where Cruise Ships Dock

In Honolulu, there are two main places where cruise ships dock:

  • Pier 11 (Aloha Tower) - the most famous terminal, right in the city center, near Aloha Tower Marketplace. It's only 5 km to Waikiki from here. You can walk or take a taxi for a 10-15 minute ride. Nearby, there are cafes, shops, and even small concert venues.
  • Pier 2 - the second terminal, a bit closer to Waikiki. It's usually used by large liners (Norwegian, Princess, Holland America). It's convenient for starting excursions or heading to the southern coast from here.

Getting Around Honolulu

On Foot, by Bus, or Waikiki Trolley?

A leisurely walk from the pier to Waikiki takes 45-60 minutes with beautiful views. For a sightseeing ride, there's the Waikiki Trolley (Pink/Red/Blue/Green Line), 1-day pass - ~$45-50, individual line - ~$10-15. The most budget-friendly option is TheBus buses: one-way fare - $3, day pass - $7.50.

What to See on Oahu

City of Honolulu and Waikiki Beach

The city center is small and very walkable. Be sure to visit Waikiki - the symbol of Hawaii. The Royal Hawaiian and Moana Surfrider hotels are open for strolling around - atmospheric courtyards and ocean views.

You can conveniently reach Diamond Head crater by bus #23 (about $3). The hike from the entrance to the summit takes about 30 minutes under the sun - water, a hat, and sneakers are a must.

Zoo and Aquarium

On the edge of Waikiki, there's the Honolulu Zoo ($14) and nearby the Waikiki Aquarium ($12) - compact and educational, especially with kids.

Pearl Harbor Memorial

The Pearl Harbor Historic Sites complex includes the USS Arizona Memorial, the battleship USS Missouri (1944), the submarine USS Bowfin (1942), and an aviation museum (about 43 aircraft, including MiG-15/MiG-21). Entry to the grounds is free, museums are paid (~$63 for the full set). Reachable by buses #20/42/62 (about 45 minutes).

Pearl Harbor Video Overview:

Polynesian Cultural Center

Polynesian Cultural Center - an ethnographic park of six Polynesian cultures in the northeast (about 50 km). You can take bus #55 (~1.5 hours) to get there. A popular ticket includes an evening show and dinner Admission and Show w/ Free Dinner (~$70, show from 7:00 to 9:00 pm - check the schedule for the specific day).

Other Interesting Places

  • Sea Life Park - marine animal park (about $30), buses #22/23 from Waikiki (about 45 minutes).
  • Byodo-In Temple - a Buddhist temple in a tropical garden.
  • Dole Plantation - can be skipped if not a fan; entertainment is modest.

Oahu Beaches

There are over 100 beaches on the island. The eastern coast is the most picturesque. Beaches are categorized as "swimming" or "surfing." All are free except Hanauma Bay (entrance ~$7.5): beautiful but crowded, snorkeling for enthusiasts.

Waikiki - safe for swimming thanks to breakwaters, with showers and restrooms. Umbrellas and loungers are expensive, most beachgoers stick to towels. Sunsets are a must: torches, music, street performances.

Route along the East Coast

  • Sandy Beach - powerful waves, a paradise for bodyboarders and surfers.
  • Makapuu Beach - very beautiful views, swim cautiously.
  • Waimanalo Beach - 9 km of soft sand and space.
  • Lanikai Beach - legendary turquoise waters and white sand; a top beach according to Travelers’ Choice.

  • Kailua Beach - an extension of Lanikai, wider and more family-friendly.
  • Kahana Bay - a secluded bay surrounded by mountains, beautiful and peaceful.

The north shore is a surfing and relaxed atmosphere haven. Along the way, there are shrimp food trucks: lunch $8-14 - simple and tasty classics.

On the northwest, visit Waimea Bay. In winter, giant waves; in summer, calm waters and excellent snorkeling.

Transport and Day Organization

  • It's convenient to plan bus routes in Google Maps; TheBus schedule is accurate.
  • Car rental is a great option for experienced drivers: good roads, simple navigation.
  • Excursions from cruise companies are usually 2-3 times more expensive; compare with local tours or self-guided routes.
  • For beach information, also check Hawaii beach maps.

Mini Checklist

  • Sunscreen (reef-safe), hat, water.
  • Flip-flops/water shoes for rocky areas.
  • Small bills for TheBus fare.
  • Allow at least 1.5-2 hours for the Diamond Head hike including travel time.

And most importantly: don't try to see all of Oahu in one day. Choose 2-3 places based on your interests and enjoy the atmosphere - this way, your experiences will be more vivid, and the day will pass without rush.
